Duration of music treatment
Speaker Setup
1
We have measured the optimal volume level assuming a fixed distance between the patient’s head and the speaker, so please make sure that you put the boombox at head level (on a table would be ideal) between 80-100cm from the patient’s head.
2
It doesn’t matter if the speakers are either 'above' the patient’s pillow, or to the left or right of the patient’s head.
3
The speaker should be directed at the patient's pillow.
1. Boombox and flash drive
The flash drive will contain two tracks
1
TRACK 1: a loud three-second beep followed by the treatment music
2
TRACK 2: just the treatment music
!
For hospital treatment we use the beep at the beginning of TRACK 1 to synchronize the music recording with the EEG recording.
For normal treatment at home you can use TRACK 2.

3. Connecting the flash drive to the boombox
1
Plug the flash drive into the USB port on the boombox
2
Press the USB button
3
Choose one of the following options:
a) When treating while recording an EEG (at the hospital) just Press PLAY
b) When treating without EEG recording (i.e. at home) Press PLAY
then Press FORWARD until you see the number 2
Adjusting the volume
The volume is set to a calibrated level for sleep, but everyone has different levels of sensitivity to sound. The ideal volume for the treatment is as loud as possible without disturbing sleep.
Increasing the volume
— If you judge that it is too quiet (for example in a noisy environment or if the patient has a hearing problem)
Decreasing the volume
— If you judge that it is too loud (if the volume is disturbing the patient's sleep)
!
Discuss the correct level with the patient to ensure the treatment volume is comfortable for sleeping.
If you change the volume from the calibrated levels, record the volume number in your seizure log.
Turn off the light before starting treatment
